Hi All - Just wanted to let people know of a GREAT new UK TV show called sherlock (BBC) sunday nights at 9pm UK time. Its a combination of Life on Mars meets Dr Who. Sherlock holmes and Dr Watson set in modern city london solving crime. Takes the Guy Richie movie into a TV series with a bit of Dr Who and Life on Mars. GREAT show.

I've been watching it. Great show. There are only 3 episodes though. Hopefully they will make more. Anyone else notice the similarity in the score for this show compared to the Robert Downey Jr movie. I must watch it again.

The three (yes only three aired episodes) have all been pretty good, the first was the best but good production values and superb casting makes up for such lacklustre investment in the "series".
As mentioned the soundtrack/score is excellent.
The good news is that there will a second batch of episodes but maybe not for a year and in the US the PBS channel has the rights with October 24th slated as the premiere.

I get the feeling that the episodes were supposed to be cut in half rather than 90 minutes a week, that said I did enjoy it a lot, and am really curious as to what the abandoned pilot is like... roll on DVD!

They maybe when broadcast in the US, a 45 minute drama on the BBC is fairly rare as they make shows to fill an hour not 40-45 minutes plus adverts. Given what I have read of some BBC stuff being cut for time then having the original easily chopped without losing content is probably a bonus.
I heard the original pilot was not good which makes me want to see what direction they went:)

I finally got a chance to watch the show, and I think significantly, the weakest one was the 2nd one, where it was well acted and everything, but the mystery was really weak and Sherlock and co. were forced to solve everything so slowly in order to fill the whole episode. It was the only episode not written by the creators (Moffat! and some other guy), so maybe it's that.
I like the actor who plays Sherlock, and of course Tim from the office playing Watson. It's kind of interesting that this Sherlock feels a bit similar to the new Doctor.

Huh. I heard that they asked for them to extend the show to 90 mins because they liked the original pilot - so the new pilot is basically the same as the old one, except with more scenes. Not sure which actually happened.
I'm not sure why they only had 3 episodes though. I think it warrants at least 5 episodes (kind of like Torchwood S3). Hope they have a second season for sure!
p.s. I really liked their take on Moriaty.

The original pilot is included in the DVD and Blu-ray boxsets due out on the 30th August in the UK. I'm not buying the series straight away, it'll be in the bargain bin within two months then I'll pick it up:)

I wonder if Sherlock-style ratiocination (to use Poe's term) is actually possible IRL. I've seen people try to do it and fail miserably. Is there anyone in real life who does this kind of thing?

Hey Shala, Showcase in Canada started running these a few weeks ago, and I think they'll be rerunning them again in October. Last week they ran the third one in the series - awesome!

Managed *ahem* to see this (except the last half hour of ep. 3--that's tonight,) and it's frakin' brilliant. I'm amazed at how they manage to import a lot of the original material while still keeping it fresh. Holmes is great, Watson is finally portrayed correctly, and
Mycroft is spot-on, although I was able to suss him out quickly
I'm not even much off a Holmes fan, I thought his methods suspect even as a tweener, but they do a good job of balancing that here. Better than I recall Doyle doing. (One word: Harry.)
Make a point of watching this. It's well worth it.

That was my problem with the original novels: it's pretty much a super power most of the time. This version does a fair job of reigning it in to the point of plausibility.
Even so, I doubt anyone can do that degree of reasoning IRL. There are people who can do it far better than the average joe, though.

I'm hoping to catch this tonight at 9pm (EST) on PBS (in the US). It sounds like it should be good! :)

I saw the episode "A Study in Pink" on Masterpiece Theater (PBS) last night. I thought it was really well done. They made it very clear that this incarnation of Holmes is adept with modern technology. I also really liked the portrayal of Dr. Watson and the way the two play off eachother.
The DVD and Blueray are avalible for Pre-order at the PBS Store online (shipping by 11/09/2010).

I've also watched the 3 movies in the last few days.
Besides reading a few Sherlock Holmes short stories in school, this is my first visit into that word. Especially liked the humor aspects of it. And a few twists I didn't see coming, like
the "gay" dude being Jim Moriarty
Now I'm only waiting for Michael Emerson as Dean Moriarty. :D

The hub & I just finished watching the 3rd one tonight- we both love it!
So smartly cast and produced. Love the freshness and balance of modern tech- and gotta say I LOVE Watson! So funny to think of him as the smitten porn star in Love Actually! lol!
Fab show! Can't wait for the next set of shows!

I thought I'd dig up this old thread as I have just finished watching the the first of the new batch of episodes 'A Scandal in Belgravia'. It was as good as I could have hoped for, simply amazing. I'm really looking forward to next week. I like the Robert Downey Jr movies, and originally I was going back and forth on which I prefered, but now I'm firmly in the BBC camp. Although that's no reason not to enjoy both.

Word. I'm also in the BBC camp after having watched the first movie last week and and now the first episode of the 2nd series a few hours ago.
As you said it was amazing. The resolution of the big cliffhanger...I totally laughed my ass off. And the female main character...oh yeah that is someone who wants to play all sides. Watson didn't have to do much in this episode but his awkward moments and his scenes with Holmes were always hilarious. And we even got a little bit more character moments of Holmes. He is a anti-social man...but also a brilliant anti-social man.
Here are my notes while I watched the episode, so spoilers abound:
ROFL!! "Staying Alive" ringtone!!
The link to Watson's blog: http://www.johnwatsonblog.co.uk/
Domina Irene Adler...IBIMB
Holmes really is a socially sorryBarb!
Watson and Holmes on the couch...why did Watson need to ask him about pants?? lol
Hmmm, why and from whom did Adler get the pics of Holmes?
Irene Adler is skinny, but still...
"I always hear Punch Me but it's usually in sub-text." :D
BBC seems to be very liberal...or Steve Moffat has Power over them.
Ahhhh, great move by Adler so Holmes has trouble reading her.
Poor Watson...he doesn't know where to look. Holmes is still socially inapt to be really troupled by Adler's look like at her nameday (<-- that was a GoT reference)
Sweet location swap with Holmes and Adler.
The attack, I'm really beginng to like Miss Adler's character traits...well the other traits as well. ;)
Molly, please hit Sherlock!!!
Hmmm, isn't that Adler's assistant which stops Watson on the street?
Zombie Irene...KILL HER!
Where did Sherlock hide that spray bottle? And that was unorthodox to throw him out of the window.
There is definitely some tension. :D How Cumberbatch can recite this minutelong monologues...or are they speeding it up?
Right, Moriarty had to show up again. :)
Yeah, already suspected that Adler had something on Mycroft.
Prediction for the end: He will get a text message. :) EDIT: CORRECT. YAY!!!

The Hounds of Baskerville wasn't bad either. It wasn't as good as last weeks episode, but I still enjoyed. Just like in the first series, the middle episode was probably the weakest. Next week is The Reichenbach Fall. I can't imagine what will happen in that episode :D

It's good to know fans of the show like the new episodes but... I am so jealous right now!!! I understand the show was co-produced by PBS so it's unlikely to come to BBC America anytime soon, but they could at least show the new episodes around the same time instead of several months apart!

I thought the first episode of the second series was terrific, but I was dissapointed by the second. The whole episode felt more like fanfic, lots of forced humor. Definitively and letdown from the previous 4 episodes total but still well worth watching.
I'm sure the last episode will be fantastic, wonder if they will kill off Holmes.
Cumberbatch is a rising star and might be difficult to get for a 3rd series.

Well, that's what happens when media companies try to pretend that old models of distribution should dictate what's not only possible, but common in the internet age.

Just finished watching the third and last episode of the 2 series and it was indeed fantastic.
I will not say any more in fear of spoiling things but do yourselves a favor and watch it when you can get it.
Cumberbatch and Freeman both turned out great performances.
Very much worth your time, I adored both series even though I was not really a big Sherlock Holmes fan.

CBS are planning a modern update to Sherlock Holmes. Do they really think they can do better than the BBC? Really? Come on!

I just watched the first episode of the first series. I couldn't help thinking of Westley and Vizzini from the Princess Bride. I kept saying that the cabbie was immune to the poison. I thot Sherlock had already studied the poison from the previous murders and had built an immunity to it as well. I was wondering if it had something to do with the nicotine patches. I figured they were both going to take the poison and Sherlock would say, "That was fun. You're under arrest."
Of course, it played out better than what I envisioned. Just thot I'd share.
Also, I knew it was the cabbie when they left the cafe and had the chase scene. I couldn't understand why Sherlock could not deduce that.

Watching second episode of first series. Favorite moment. "The average human can only retain 62%. Do you remember?" "Yes. I took a photo." *giggle*
Second laugh. "I'm trying to get off with Sarah." *awkward pause* *Sarah arrives* "Oh. Hello."

For all those Jonesin' for more Sherlock, there is another Moffat modernized creation called Jekyll (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0497298/). Fellow GWCer Badgerspoon turned me on to it. It is available on Netflix IW. It stars James Nesbitt. You will not be disappointed. Check it out.

I've watched the first season in the past week that I was home sick. WOW, is all I can say. Talk about great writing. The stories are so detailed and complex, that I have to actually sit still, put my iPad/Twitter away and pay attention. (The only other show like that right now that does the same thing for me is Fringe. BSG was another one.)
I really enjoyed S1, and plan to watch them again before S2 debuts in May.

So true. I'm not sure I can wait three more months for Sherlock to come to the USA (escpecially since it has been out in the UK for over a month now). I'm not in the habit of illegally downloading media, but this sort of thing almost demands it. The following comic pretty much says it all...

Well, saw the new info on the CBS Sherlock.....
Watson to be played by Lucy Lui...
Apparently a lawsuit might be on it's way as well from "across the pond"...
Some how I imagine a "Spinal Tap'ish" scene in the court room
"So you have Sherlock, and Watson solving crimes in an big city helping the police. Isn't that the same show?"
"No, ours has Lucy Lui"
"But she is playing Watson!"
"She's Lucy Lui"
"But she is PLAYING the same character, Sherlock's assistant!"
"She's Lucy Lui...."
Are these television studios just lazy these days??
As another odd way I think, maybe the networks should have a Show Battle. Give them a show to develop for example:
Three's Cylon
Premise: After escaping a destroyed Caprica, Jack is sharing a cramped room with twin sexy sisters, he must pretend to be gay since the men's assigned rooming is full.
Little does Jack now, but these are Model Six CYLON SPIES!!
Give them a year to develop and shoot them. Same time same night showing, three networks go in, one show walks out!!
Anyway, Lucy Lui!
