Nice post. I want both Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age. However, as a PC-only player (I don't own any console), I fear they'll include Securerom in the installation like they did for Spore and Mass Effect 1. I investigated digital purchases to see whether they were Securerom free, but no dice. They have Securerom also.

One day, I'll get a small-ish hard drive for a windows installation just to play Mass Effect 1, but no time soon.

That's how I feel about SWTOR (the MMO), but I won't be getting/playing it.

Square Enix is still in the game, but they are console only these days.

Anyone else getting this game tomorrow? I'm extremely excited about this game and can't wait until 10am tomorrow so I can get my copy. I may end up loving this game much more than ME and since ME is my favorite game ever that's saying a lot. Bioware has really upped the replayability on this one with all the different origins, romances and decisions. I can't wait to see them all play out. As an added bonus my favorite band has one of their new songs featured in the game.

I've had it pre-ordered for a while. Although it's not out here until Friday. Hopefully the postal strike which is going on at the moment won't effect delivery. I plan on spending a good part of the weekend playing it. I read the first of the prequel books 'The Stolen Throne' yesterday. It's not too bad, at least I've a general idea of the background story before I start playing.

The Stolen Throne was a good novel (especially for a first book by the author) but I think the second prequel, The Calling was a better set up for the game as it focuses more on the Grey Wardens and Darkspawn.

I hope the postal strike doesn't effect you getting the game when it comes out there.

got this showing up today via Amazon Release Date delilvery! :D

I didn't know there were prequel books or I would have at least TRIED to read them (ugh I've worked 60+ hours the past 3 weeks and 50+ the month before that so I haven't exactly had tons of free time)

I might get one or two hours or playtime in this entire week until the weekend though :(

only got to play about 40 minutes of it tonight (sigh...lol) but really am liking it so far

KOTOR style combat mixed with a little ME is nice

love the atmosphere as well

doing a Human Noble Warrior for my first play through, I had thought it would take me a bit to get use to the game combat wise and that warrior would be the easiest to start with, while the combat turned out not to be hard I'm sticking with the human because I think I can already see me doing the beginning stories for everyone at least once I think

Ah crap. I just looked on Amazon and DA doesn't have any DRM. I wish I had pre-ordered it for a cheaper price. Now, I'll wait for the price to go down. I can't justify spending $40+ on a game atm.

I've got The Calling ordered, but it was hard to find someone to ship to Ireland for a reasonble rate. I saw someone on Amazon selling a copy for something around £700 before shipping. Quite ridiculous. I managed to find a very reasonbly priced copy. I got word that my order has been shipped and I also got word that there are parcels waiting for me in the local post office. The two events seem to close together for me to assume that it is Dragon Age waiting for me, but there's a chance. I do have other stuff ordered as well.

I ordered the Player's Guide. Gonna order the game when a certain retailer has it available on its site.

*sigh* I hear an echo in my wallet.

I'm afraid how well my 3-year old PC (E6600 [2.4 GHz dual core], ATI X1800 Crossfire, 2 gig RAM) will handle the game. It's above the min reqs, but leaves a lot to be desired. I might install it on my laptop which I got last year, but I prefer the 5.1 speakers on my desktop.

I picked up my copy yesterday and I love it!!! Bioware has done it again!! If you enjoyed Mass Effect you WILL enjoy this game!

Also like I said previously if you can get down to your local GameStop and get your paws on a there's still a good chance that you will still be able to get the "Blood Armor," that will be usable in Mass Effect 2 along with some other in-game goodies.

I got my copy today. So far I'm enjoying it. It has a nice feel to it, I'd expect nothing less from Bioware. I'd prefer Mass Effect style combat, and it's taking a bit of getting use to the main character being silent and the dialogue options being exactly what the other characters hear.

I didn't have that long to play tonight, but tomorrow night unless I head out somewhere I'll be playing for a while. I spend quite a bit of time updating my XBOX and then redeeming a frak load of codes that came with my edition. There's just one bit of DLC I don't have 'The Warden's Tower' It's pretty cheap so I might pick it up eventually.

I went with Steam for this game and it worked out pretty well, save one kink right after it finished downloading where I had to restart Steam before it would de-crypt it correctly.

That was Saturday and I've been playing every evening since and absolutely loving it. Actually spent the greater part of yesterday playing. The environments, characters, story and music are all gorgeous.

I'm in a bit of a lull now though. I really want some better armor *coughdrakeskincough* before starting the next big quest, so now I'm just running around doing sidequests to earn money/XP.

So far my only real complaint are the load times - Gods, they're almost as bad as KOTOR II...almost. Anyone else having that problem?

I know I'm being extremely pedantic, but I wish they could have got someone in to proof read some of the dialogue. One example I've came across that particularly bothers me for some reason is the phrase 'I feel badly'. Is there something wrong with your ability to feel? Certainly not a big deal, but that's one of those phrases that really grinds my gears. At least they have used the word 'Irregardless' yet.

Irregardless is an awesome sounding word, not sure why, but there it is. Still, its one of those words that makes me want to correct people when they use it. I learned in middle school that people dont like to be corrected, unfortunately for me and for them.

Agreed!!!. I made mine a couple weeks ago in the online gaming thread, and was a little surprised that there was not a lot more talk about this great game... Soooo, I smelled under my arm pits, just to make sure it was some stink keeping people away from my thread :p, when I noticed THIS thread.

In any case I need to get my rear back into Dragon Age. I'm actually thinking about going to grab the strat guide, not to help me beat the game. It's just there are so many little things you can miss if you don't make the right choice or have the right party members. Like this little nugget, I won't give away any spoilers, so the following is not a spoiler-per se, but more like some friendly advice Try to resist replacing Alistair in your party if possible. Things get interesting

Anyway my life has been spent playing Modern Warfare 2, Borderlands (with friends) and reading the new Star Wars Karen Traviss 501st Novel.

I started on hard with a Dalish Woods Elf, a rogue I hope to make a Bard. So far so good, the graphics are awesome, there are a ton of dialog options in each encounter and I like the combat system (especially since you can pause and give commands to each party member).Character creation is a HUGE improvement over ME, I imagine it will be similar or maybe improved on in ME2. I wouldn't mind a thread merger, but I still think we need a DA:O spoiler thread. Since there's already two threads, we can turn an existing thread into one.

From the official guide:
"Your race selection has a major impact on your origin story. Elves and dwarves have access to two unique origin stories; humans have access to one unique origin story, and they share the mage origin story with the elves. Race also affects how certain NPCs interact with you in the game."

I didn't put this in spoiler quotes since this is pretty easy info to come by. Right in the beginning of the character creation guide.

Although I'm playing as a human rogue, I'm just working on a pretty classic strategy and it seems to be working out alright. I spent the earlier parts of the game balancing my attributes, and then focused more and more on dexterity, especially after I got my Duelist specialization. I rely on tanks like Alistair or Dog (and now Shale!) to soak up damage while I hit stuff and a good mage like Wynne or Morrigan to keep me alive.

I'm doing that area now. I did Broken Circle first because I needed a healer. Orzammar doesn't seem hard, but it is tedious. Admittedly, I may change my mind before it's done. Broken Circle (the only post-origin arc I've completed so far) was long and hard to me. Prolly whatever place you head to first will be hard since you're low level?

I have to say, I recommend doing Broken Circle first even if you don't need a healer. I got 4 Strength, 4 Dexterity, 4 Willpower, 2 Magic, 5 Cunning, and 2 Cunning in free attributes for my character. Really comes in handy early in the game.

Or you could turn off that option (permanent gore?) in your settings?
Ruin my role play with helpful advice why don't you.

I'm Dwarf Warrior Noble this time out. Using two-handed weapons for the damage even though I prefer dual wielding from Baldur's Gate 2. I'll prolly dual wield an Elf Warrior some day. I might go Human Magi next. Dunno.

Leaving Rogue Ranger last prolly. Leliana's damage output doesn't impress me.

Ruin my role play with helpful advice why don't you.

Bow rogue is REALLY consistent damage. At like level 15ish it's like 35 an arrow crits around around 70-80. But if you get a good rotation going on a single enemy like. Multishot(around 35) to stun then Arrow of Slaying (Around 150-200 damage)then Shatter shot (Around 35) to knock them off their feet then Crit show (80) you wreck most non-bosses.

Also I did Red Cliffe first up till right before the end then went to Broken Circle and came back to you know

Leliana is only lvl 12(.5) for me, but I intend to finish fleshing out her arrow talents. I only notice what kind of damage she (and everyone else) doing on tough bosses like revenants (man, they take forever to kill). So, maybe that's biasing my opinion of rogue ranger.

To be fair, she was hitting for 16 while the others were hitting for 4-6...when they hit. d:

my advice for anyone is to do the Mage Circle first...you get a healer party member from there (I don't think that's too much of a spoiler?)

but I did every other area first and now the bit I'm doing after picking up the healer is MUCh easier, seriously I was going nuts with frustration so many times before running out of healing potions

One example I've came across that particularly bothers me for some reason is the phrase 'I feel badly'. Is there something wrong with your ability to feel?

Perhaps it's a subtle warning about numbness and tingling due to video-game-related repetitive stress injuries. :D

Irregardless is an awesome sounding word, not sure why, but there it is. Still, its one of those words that makes me want to correct people when they use it. I learned in middle school that people dont like to be corrected, unfortunately for me and for them.

I like to use it on purpose, emphasizing it to a ridiculous degree to make the mockery clear. Sadly, few people even seem to notice. :(

Re: Rogues and Specializations
I very highly recommend learning the Duelist specialization for any rogue, and then combine it with very high dexterity, light armor and blades (e.g. Wade's Superior Drakeskin Set / Starfang / Rose's Thorn). I especially love the 'Precision Striking' talent paired with Dual-wield's 'Momentum'.

I used that for my first specialization and Ranger for the second, though Assassin/Duelist would be pretty formidable as well.

My first run through, I was DW Dwarf warrior. Made it to lvl 8 and about 90% through the mage tower before I read that I was hurting my damage output trying to max Str and Dex and not maxing Dual-Weapon Mastery ASAP. Then, I sat down for about 2 hours plotting my skill trees for my current two-handed warrior and my parties levels. I still made mistakes, but now it's adjusted for my next play through.

I'm not even sure I'll ever play Rogue because it's a play style I don't usually enjoy. I just keep Leliana in the back and leave her alone mostly. But if I do, he'll prolly be Ranger. I doubt I'll train him for backstab, etc., because too many monsters have AoE and I prefer only having 1 or 2 characters to heal.

Sorry for the Spam, but at lvl 12-13 and before, I've been having gold issues in the game. I currently have 32 gold and change, but I want so much stuff (armor, weapons, and those tomes) that I find myself just hoarding it because I don't want to spend it then get something better in the very next dungeon. Of course, I used a lot of gold buying backpacks (I can hold 120 items now).

Is there a point where gold becomes irrelevant like in BG2/KOTOR? Am I the only one with gold problems? Freaking Darkspawn influenced recession...

Yes, I killed that Asunder spirit instead of taking the gold. Letting him go doesn't sit well for me even in a game. d:

I just dumped my rogue play through. I specced hoping to become a Bard but it never happened. Ended up in Redcliffe without money or potions, my archery sucked and that big oaf Sten had no armor. Needless to say I lost repeatedly in that gorram fight. Just started a mage playthrough and Im loving it, I think Ive had one guy fall in battle so far (admittedly Im not very far in).
Also heard if you respec Leliana (is that how you spell it?) she is fantastic. Havent used her yet, didnt need a second rogue in my first party.

With my noble dwarf war, I am taking wynne, leliana, and alistair as my main party. Leliana's Song of Valor is nice for extended battles or just to recoup mana before moving on.

By respec, do you mean "toughen"? You can toughen her and Alistair through various dialog.

That happened to me until I went Morrigan (healer, I have her one talent in healing), me (DPS), Sten (DPS), and Alistair (tank). Then, I reconfigured the party by a camp outside my destination.

A bit unbalances, but my normal party didn't have the DPS or armor for an extended fight so soon into the game.

I'm totally bummed because I think I screwed up me being in a relationship with Leliana, I don't know how but I think I accidentally put us down the 'friend' path, even though the whole time I was trying to pick the more flirtyish responses

I also totally screwed up the Landsmeet lol

oh well I still see myself playing through it a few more times!

my next character is going to be somewhat evil and I'm going to try to have a Morrigan relationship (I was trying for her in my first game but I was being super good and she kept disapproving of what I was doing lol)

I think my biggest problem was that I kissed Morrigan in front of Leliana very early on so she never really took to me I guess despite doing her personal quest and having her like meter maxed out :(

Almost done! It was getting late last night so I had to stop pretty much right before the very last battle - and I do mean the very last battle. It was so difficult to do that but I had an early meeting this morning /grumble.

I'm using Alistair, Morrigan and Shale for the end game and it's been great so far. In the beginning, I primarily used Alistair, Wynne and Dog / Leilana / Shale. I wanted to use Morrigan more, but she and Alistair are such opposites I couldn't keep both their approval ratings up, without plying them with more gifts than necessary to compensate. A shame too, because they have the best idle dialgoue.

But I'm already planning out my next game. I want to go through and play all of the origins stories and then play this game over again slowly so I have a good endgame (or two) to use just in case there's a sequel à la ME2. I frakked up the sidequests and missed a couple backpacks which hurt when doing long quests like Deep Roads.

I think the romance with Leliana and Alistair are the easiest ones to accidentally mess up. Morrigan and Zevran are easy, no real flirting is required just gifts and a few conversations. You have to work for it with Leliana and Alistair. Although I do prefer the romance with Leliana as a female PC so Alistair usually gets ignored.

Interesting. I thought Alistair was by far the easiest Bioware romance I've ever done. All you have to do is talk to him all the time, say the nicest thing / agree with him, give him his mother's amulet and a couple choice gifts. I had him locked down after the Circle and Redcliffe quests.

I like Alistair because he is a nice combination of Carth (same cheesy lines, same intense sense of justice) and Kaidan (a little sheltered, a bit of a geek).

Hopefully, this isn't spoiler, but there is a one and only chance to start a romance with Leliana very early in the game. After that, you can't. Then you'll need 100 points in Approval to... Yeah.

Anyone have any gold making tips?
I was having gold issues too. My suggestion is to do the Paragon quests. I went from 30 gold to 130 gold. But, you'll need high persuasion.

There's a quest called Precious Metals in Dust Town from Rogek, but you'll need 50 gold in order to start it. If you have high persuasion, you can start from 50 gold, lose 40, travel to Circle Tower and Speak to Godwin (the closet guy) to gain 65 gold + a dagger to sell, then back to Rogek for another 25 gold (ask for 30). So, you'll go from 50 to 100 gold + a dagger.
You'll need to run back and forth between other quests in Orzammar before you get the coin to do the above.

Ok. Now, that I've finished it, I have to agree. Orzammar is a slog fest. I had to run back and forth because my inventory kept filling up. Or, I didn't do a quest properly.

I still recommend doing Broken Circle first for the Attributes and getting some coin for a quest in Orzammar that allows you to double your gold if you maxed persuasion.

Alistair and Leliana aren't hard to romance, in fact both romances are fairly easy, but in comparison to Morrigan and Zevran they are easier to mess up and miss out on. Morrigan and Zevran are just easier by comparison. Honestly Alister is the only male romance option Bioware has done that I actually like. I couldn't stand either Carth and hated Kaiden by default simply because he sounded like Carth. Leliana is now my favorite romance option ever from Bioware.

Wait, that's just my play through huh?

Getting back on track, I'm not sure I'll play female or try to romance Morrigan in another play through. I'm one of those guys who try to identify with my character. I don't mind playing female in table top D&D, but only because I know the other players and GM won't try to make trouble for me... Well, they did, but not because my character was female.

On the XBox360 you have two sets of weapons each with two slots. That way you could switch between a Two handed sword to a Single weapon and shield. A Ranger could switch between Two weapons and a Bow or a Mage could have two separate Wands. Maybe it isn't the same on PC?

I'm looking at 784 friendly fire so far. I think it would be a lot higher but I got Alistair wearing a decent amount of frost resist gear so I don't turn him into an ice-cube every time I cast Cone Of Cold. I see it hasn't updated since 4pm yesterday, so that number may be a bit higher. Hard to avoid aoe damage in those small rooms in the Mage Tower.

Nope, you were right on, at least if the Dragon Age Wiki is anything to go by (from Alistair's character page):

"In writing Alistair, David Gaider was inspired by Xander from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Malcom Reynolds from Firefly."

Xander I can see but I don't see much of Captain Tightpants in Alistair. Maybe a bit of Wash but not Mal.

Agreed. I can't say as I see him as any specific character, more just Whedonesque.

Alistair: "Why do you always go on about how stupid I am? I'm not stupid, am I?"
Morrigan: "If you need to ask the question..."
Alistair: "Because it hurts my manly feelings you know. All one of them."

My stats

Good to know. (:

As far as your character, hmm. Strange how your greatest damage is 75 at level 21 compared to my 101 at level 15. But, you have a 50 party contribution compared to my 45. I'm assuming that's percentage. 93 versus 81 hit rate. Great day, she has killer Dex. Interesting build.

Can she kill single foes in less time it takes for the rest of your party to kill another?

When I play dual wield again, I'm gonna try to get 36-42 Dex ASAP, then focus on strength.

Yes! Especially if I could get enemies to focus on other party members, I would just use her to sneak behind and stab away. I found it even more effective if I had her equipped two daggers, but I just couldn't pass up Starfang. I really, really, wish there had been a dagger option for that! :\

Leliana rocks the Arrow of Slaying now. Thanks for the tip. I'm trying to Achieve Heavy Hitter (Main character inflicted 250 damage with a single hit). I'm up to 206. I think I got a chance with Berserker's Final Blow if I get more Strength and Stamina at level 21.

What kind of names are people naming their dogs? For some reason, I picture a lot of Ravage out there.

I named my first one after pet NPC I had in FFXI Online. Then, I read that the developers have their own name for him and I've stuck with that.

They call him Rabbit and I like it. Seems to fit.

Bah, I accidently refreshed instead of clicking Submit.

I made a Warrior Dalish Elf Archer build and a Warrior City Elf Dual Weapon build. The Dual Weapon build kills stuff faster and that play through seems easier than the Archery build so far. The Archery build has higher spike damage though I haven't hit 250+ damage in one hit yet with Arrow of Slaying, but the Dual Weapon build has higher sustained damage output and a higher accuracy.

Only two more origins to complete and they'll be complete play throughs.

On an aside, I thought I wouldn't like the City Elf origins. But, the responses you can give to Cailan made it worth while. (:

I did not get an error message about my profile on my 360 yesterday for my excruciatingly short sessions with the game. But it also seems to be unsure about whether or not I downloaded my rightful free DLC content.

I have anaming system I always follow. Pets get named Orion. My character gets namd Jarathen, or other spellings for alternates. Once I get past the structured first act on my current guy I'm going to make sure I can access my DLC.

You do not need to download patches prior to Patch 1.02. Downloading Patch 1.02 contains all previous patches. Downloading Patch 1.02 will provide you with all patch data available.

Balance

Daggers now apply 0.5 points of damage per additional point in dexterity and 0.5 points of damage per additional point in strength, as originally intended. This increases dagger damage for high-dexterity characters.
During combat, mana or stamina reserves now correctly regenerate more quickly when reserves are low. This allows players to occasionally use an talent or spell in the later stages of lengthy fights.
When exploring, mana and stamina now regenerate more quickly at higher character levels. This reduces downtime between fights.
The spells Force Field, Crushing Prison, Cone of Cold, and Blizzard now have shorter durations and/or longer cooldowns. This ensures that combatants can no longer stun-lock each other by repeatedly casting the same spell.
The cooldowns for several low-level sustained abilities are now shorter. This ensures that players are not penalized for accidentally deactivating them.
Certain battles were not scaling properly, resulting in excessively difficult fights. They now scale as intended.
Enemy corpses now drop health poultices and money more appropriately, resulting in less clutter in the player's inventory.

Gameplay

In rare cases, enemy corpses were selectable when they contained no loot. This no longer occurs.
Party members whose combat tactics were set to defensive behavior no longer stop attacking after using a spell or talent.
In rare cases, combat tactics conditions could fail to determine whether a character had enough mana or stamina to use an ability. This no longer occurs.
The Rally talent no longer repeats its audio effect if it is active during certain conversations.
The Rally talent no longer deactivates upon area transitions or conversations.
The Shimmering Shield spell now deactivates when the character is out of mana.

And, more.

ostagar is hitting this week for 360 and pc as i understand it, later in the month for ps3.

i just beat the game and it's really just incredible. there were some parts i didn't love, but the main quest missions were far more fun than those found in mass effect (which i also love to death). i'm looking forward to the second playthrough i've just cracked open. i feel like my entire first run was a get-familiar run with my standard altruistic character (though that itself was a re-roll after 7 hours as a different character), and i'm ready to try to really dig into the more advanced side of battle tactics. it's too bad the 360 is less strategy-oriented, though as a whole the experience on the console is one i think i'd prefer anyway.

Am really late to the game, but I just started last weekend and am battling in the Broken Circle to get the mages to help me with the possessed kid over at Redcliffe. But for some reason I find the broken circle tower to be really creepy and claustrophobic (I can't leave the place, so I pretty much save at almost every door/floor, heh.) so am advancing really slowly there. One thing though - how do I expand my inventory slots? I keep having to ditch some stuff because my bag gets full, and I have yet to meet a trader who has extra 'inventory bags' for sale.

And yes, everyone we've met almost always have something derogatory to say about me being a female and an elf. It's pretty funny.

tanstaafl
February 16th, 2010, 08:28 AM
Most vendors sell backpacks that will add slots to your inventory. They're usually at the very bottom of their lists of items for sale. The trader at Ostagar had one (actually, you can get two from him) as does the Dwarf trader that shows up at your camp.

Also, what system are you playing on? If you are on the PC there is a free storage mod that adds a permanent storage chest to your camp.

He's on the PS3.

Also note, that the cap is 125 items for the back pack. At least on the PC. I tried buying another backpack at 125 and the game did nothing except take my money.

On your first play through, it's difficult to know what to keep and what to trash. I did the Keep DLC for more storage, but hadn't really needed it after the first couple of times.

I keep certain armors sets (ones that lower Stamina costs) and sell the others (ones that add defense bonus), and that made item management much simpler.

Oooh, thanks! I guess I'd have to hit up that trader once I'm out of the Circle Tower. *Counting the days til I get to play again. It's been too long!*.

I do the same thing. The dungeons dont change and the enemies dont respawn so in many cases you can go back whenever you want and loot away. I also put gear I dont want to sell on allies I dont play with which can free up quite a bit of space.

1.03 Patch is out.

http://social.bioware.com/page/da-patches

You do not need to download patches prior to Patch 1.03. Downloading Patch 1.03 contains all previous patches. Downloading Patch 1.03 will provide you with all patch data available.

* Various changes have been made to code and resources to support the Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening expansion pack. Most of these changes do not affect Origins itself.
* Some players were experiencing increasingly long load times. A major cause of this problem has been fixed.
* At higher levels, non-player characters now receive a bonus to armor penetration. This mitigates an unintentional imbalance with well-armored high-level characters, since armor penetration previously did not scale as aggressively as armor itself did.
* Elite-rank enemies (lieutenants) can no longer be shattered. This preserves the intended tactical design of many combat encounters.
* Portraits for summoned creatures (like a ranger's wolf) were displaying improperly while in the party camp. This no longer occurs.

Reviewers are saying 25 hours. Now, I like to play every little inch of a game so that 25 hours will be longer for me. A friend of mine is a Munchkin Gamer and can finish 25 hours in 10 or less.

So, apparently, it's 25 hours though YMMV

Edit to add: Apparently the game does not have the same value for money in game play, story or technical smoothness but still worth while. If you are an efficent player you will likely get less than 20 hours out of it.

Well, I got this game last weekend and have played a bit. I'm having a bit of trouble getting invested in it, but I'm not all that far in (character just became a Gray Warden). Could also be that I'm having trouble coming down from the awesomeness overload that was ME2.

One thing this made me realize even more strongly is that whoever does voice casting at Bioware would fit right in here at GWC. I'd already heard (from Sean on the 'cast) that Claudia Black was in this game, but I didn't know about Kate Mulgrew. That means they're up to 4 Trek actors that I can think of (Ethan Phillips in KOTOR, Marina Sirtis in ME1, Michael Dorn in ME2, and Kate), plus all the other awesome voice actors from all over sci-fi.

I thought I recognized Duncan's voice too, but I couldn't place it until I checked on Wikipedia, and he did narration for a bunch of Disney rides.

The game does start out really slow, that opening area is like 3-6 hours long depending on what you do. Then it does the typical BIOWARE breakup of you can go to such and such places in any order. Its an older style game for the most part. Took me 52 hours to beat the main quest, with very little sidequesting, and 15 to beat awakenings and I rushed through that. Saving my next full playthrough for my deployment that way I can put another 90 hours into the game and not feel like I'm wasting time at the house heh.

DA:O has a long play through though. I've finished ME2 4 times. I've yet to finish a play through of DA:O. My longest play through is 110 hours. So even though I've finished ME2 4 times, I feel like I've really gotten my money's worth with DA:O. Not so much with ME2 however.

Anway, DA:O and ME2 are different genres. In my mind, they aren't really comparable. Both are excellent games, but for different reasons.

DA:O does follow the standard Bioware fare of the hero have something in common with the main protagonist(s), a la KOTOR and BG, though.

So spouse brought this home for me to play on his PS3 yesterday :) and I love it! I know I've been wanting to play since it came out last year but actually having it and playing it is a ton of fun. I can't wait to try all the different origin stories, though I'm surprised that I find myself second-guessing a lot of my choices, like the "what if I had said this instead" options... I've had to physically pull myself away from the game, I am enjoying it so much!

You can be anything, everything. I've done all of the Origins. I tend to favor Warrior personally. Started with a Dual Wielder (because they were so good in BG2), then got through 75% of the game with a two hander, now I'm about a 3rd through as a tank. Tank seems best for me since my other warriors tend to draw aggro with their damage. Now, Sten is doing the same thing I was. I feel empathy for Alistair now. d:

Alas, I've had to switch the game to easy mode because all the repetition is grating my nerves. I have to do Broken Circle first to get Wynne every single Warrior or Rogue play through.

P.S. The game been out awhile. Are we allowed to talk about minor spoilers now? I don't mean big "Bruce Willis was really a ghost the whole time" spoilers. Just simple ones.

P.S.S. I'll smack anyone who gives me grief for my Bruce Willis spoiler...

Dialog, yes. Choices you make can have big impact in the game as well as how party members react to you.

Skill building is pretty typical of an RPG. You gain xp and at level, you get points to spend on improving your character. So it is similar to ME in that respect. But, after the first 5 levels or so, you won't get a level per mission as in ME2.

That said, character building is more in depth in DAO than ME2. DAO is a much longer game. And as such, your character and your party members have more options than characters in ME2. But, that's not a bad thing.

Yeah I'm not sure what's up with the bags yet... and I'm still figuring out the whole party thing.

And I'm incredibly slow moving through games, I like to talk to everyone and see everything :o

And yes, everyone we've met almost always have something derogatory to say about me being a female and an elf. It's pretty funny.

Yeah, my character's an elven mage, so she has a lot of interesting conversations with people. WTF, Grey Wardens, why does everyone think women can't be part of it?

I'm in the middle of the Mage Tower quests now (left my elf in the Fade, bad player I am), I think if I hadn't started out there I would be hella confused, but having done the Mage origin story, well, it's downright familiar.

I'm slow too. Which is why I have a play through with 110 hours that's not even finished. I don't see how ppl can finish this game in 50 hours.

What's confusing about bags and the party thing?

I'm playing as a female dwarven tank atm. It's interesting seeing the different reactions and dialog options.

"...I'm the bravest one here. And, I'm a woman!"

There are female wardens in the opening scenes of the game, so I dunno. Medieval sexism I guess.

Glad you are enjoying the game.

Patch 1.04 is now available.

http://social.bioware.com/page/da-patches

GAMEPLAY

Multiple transitions in and out of Fade areas were multiplying the number of visual effects running, which slowed down gameplay. This no longer occurs.
Fixed pick-pocketing. Characters were successfully stealing, but not receiving any items.
...
GAMEPLAY

Fixed an issue with the wrong characters appearing in Morrigan's ritual.
Players who rescued their party members in the Fade of the Broken Circle plot are no longer forced to fight the sloth demon alone.
It is no longer possible for the player to get blocked during gameplay by pursuing both candidates' quests in the Orzammar plot line.
I was wondering why I wasn't getting some loot occasionally!

Edit: Added spoiler tags as I've realized that's what they were. ):

Yes I played it!

No there are no pictures, none were allowed.

They put out a thing on twitter saying to come "here" and play the game. We got a short 10 min speech and demonstration by the games lead designer Mike Laidlaw and then got 5 min to play through an intro battle.

As for the combat system it really is ME2 meets DA:O, we only saw the 360 version though. They did have some new unannounced DLC to test out but I didn't wan't to get out of line for that.

It was running mostly slily smooth in combat no slowdown that i saw, better then ME2 did on a good day. Some textures were still missing so that could slow it down in the future but the game LOOKED fantastic.

Still need to see the PC one but this feels like a more legit game then the previous 360 incarnation?

Also we got some story spoilers, nothing big but anyone out there who thought that the main character might be the archdemon - warden offspring are wrong. Doesn't fit the timeline. Anyway I'll post later if no one else does but I have to get ready for W00tstock.

Well, I just finished my first runthrough. Didn't understand the romance system soon enough to get any of those achievements. After how long the rest of the story took, the boss fight didn't seem all that epic. Spamming the ballistas, then getting close for the 4 hit special (from the sword and shield tree) every once in a is a bit too easy. Might have gone a less cheesy route if rejecting Morrigan's idea didn't take her from 100% approval to gone, since she was my offensive mage. With her gone, I took Wynne (healer), Leliana (range), and Sten (2 hand tank) for the finale.

Also ran through a couple more origins, and after running the Dwarf Noble origin, I'm glad I supported Behlen on the first runthrough, because I don't think I'll be able to bring myself to do it again. I think after I do the last 3 origins, I'll be done with Dragon Age for a while.

I'm just finished a recent play through of Dragon Age, including all the DLC (Awakenings, The Golems of Amagorrak, Witch Hunt, Lelilana's song and The Darkspawn Chronicles). It was a lot of fun. I have to say the the final boss in the Golems of Amagorrak really, REALLY sucked on hard mode. I mean it was one my most frustrating moments in video gaming. I just beat it five minutes ago. Next time I play that particular DLC it will be on easy and we'll see how it likes multiple 'Storm of the Centuries' (not an advisable tactic when friendly fire is on). It must have cost me about a 100 healing potions.

I am extremely pleased to get that out of the way. Now that it is, Lair of the Shadow Broker here I come.,

Shimmer
September 28th, 2010, 09:36 AM
Ha, yes the final boss was a killer. Was only my own PC who lasted more than a minute or so in that fight, the NPCs were just fodder. Had to keep running away then lobbing things, putting Strength of Stone on, running away, healing, stamina potions, more running. I rejoiced when I took him down for the first time. My rejoicing was cut rather short though, should have expected that. Much cussing ensued.

I'm finally going to choose Harrowment this time (just started a new playthrough since I haven't played the game in a while, and damnit, I refuse to have Alistair dump me because I'm an elf, that bastard. :D Plus, looking forward to DAO 2 so wanted to get myself back into that world.)

In the first playthrough, I naturally thought of Harrowment as the evil choice because I thought he would be a terrible leader with his stubborn traditionalism and non-globalization that's going to doom all the working class and casteless people (I guess being an elf who's berated at every turn too made me really dislike Harrowment right from the get go). Bhelan is a sneakyass murderous dude, but even with that in mind I thought he would be a much better leader who looks to the future rather than the past.

And this time, I'm actually going to try slaying Flemeth (who I wussed out on the first time around, hee).

I've got my Signature edition pre-ordered. In fact I have it for a cheaper price that what the normal edition is going for on Amazon at the moment. I've checked a couple of stores and the Signature edition is no longer available. I just hope that they don't decide to introduce a different special edition. I hope this method of getting early pre-orders doesn't become too common. It could be very easy to miss a pre-order window. I'll have to make sure that I keep an eye out for Mass Effect 3

I must play another run through of Origins before DA2 is released. I'm very familliar with the story, but I've a few achievements to collect.

This infuriating scam has me waiting for the eventual "complete" edition of DA2. I'll just continue my DA replay with my "ruthlessly determined but not evil" sorceror girl.

Which scam? I am just curious because I know people are upset with how EA/Bioware is tackling the issue of revenue lost from previously owned video game sales by putting in DLC in new copies of their games.

I can sort of see why they do it, and I usually buy Bioware games on day 1 so I just feel like all of this release date DLC is a bonus for me.

Or are you just ticked off that they eventually release all the DLC with the game in a package at the same retail price a year later?

Jarathen
January 11th, 2011, 12:58 PM
i don't mind the concept of bundling some DLC with new copies. that i totally understand. i also don't mind post-release DLC if the game feels complete as-is. i'm a big believer in "pay in individual value, not market value", so I often get games for much less than they release for.

Anyway, while I don't have a problem with new game bundled DLC, I do have a problem with mandatory pre-orders. It just seems like a cheap way to ensure I'm on board without any way to ensure I am buying a quality product. Let's be honest, here. BioWare makes brilliant games, but they are often flawed and need post-release support to fine-tune.

I got DAO ar launch and love it, but I'll wait this time around. Once you give games about a year (which is super-easy; just have a child), you find that by staying about that far behind the curve you can reap the benefits in cheaper games. I still buy new because I still want to reward the publisher. But I can't get behind this idea that I'll need to put X amount down months and months in advance of a game's release to ensure I receive a package of content.

Instead of feeling incentivized, like Cerberus Network or Shale, I feel punished. And that's not the way to treat customers, especially when the product sells so well as-is.

I don't blame or otherwise disdain people who got on board with the Signature Edition. I wrestled with it over the past week because I knew how I felt but also how much I want to play it. In the end, though, I just can't get behind that practice. Besides, RDR is coming down in price...

Day's six-episode run, due to hit the Web this year, is set in Ferelden, the same fantasy land in which 2009's Dragon Age: Origins and the upcoming sequel Dragon Age II play out. In the Tolkienesque sword-and-sorcery adventure game, several races join forces to combat a scourge called the Darkspawn (think of them as cousins to the orcs in The Lord of the Rings).

A peek at the Dragon Age II narrative shows Day wrote an original story line around a character for herself, Tallis, an Elven assassin.

"Tallis is headstrong, she fights dirty, and she has a really sarcastic sense of humor," she says. "I wanted to bring a modern sensibility to a fantasy character in a fantasy world."

Tallis goes on a quest to capture a renegade magician. Along the way, she gathers her own fellowship. "She can't accomplish her mission alone, so finding allies is tricky," Day says. "The success or failure of the mission will have a big impact on her future and her freedom."

Filming took place over a dozen days last month in the L.A. area, with Independence Day associate producer Peter Winther as director and John Bartley (Lost) as cinematographer. "They are going to take this a step above what we have seen on the Web before," says Day, who also co-produced Redemption.

Haha! When I was doing my "get all achievements" run, I got 3 (I think it was Morrigan, Leliana, and then Zevran, in that order) all in the same "night".

I can only imagine what my character must have smelled like upon leaving Zevran's tent.

OK, I was able to get the ashes before going to Redcliff, but I couldn't get to Eamon before dealing with the Demon.

Anyone got the DA2 demo yet. I tried to get it but apparently it's exclusive to Gold members for a week. I guess I'll have to wait. I guess I'll have a chance to finish my DAO playthrough.

Well I played half of the demo and then stopped because I didn't want to see any more of the story than I had to.

It is clear that this is a faster, streamlined and more console friendly version of Dragon Age than Origins. From what I've read, consoles were the lead platform during development of DA2 as opposed to the PC for Origins, and it shows.

Unfortunately, character customization was disable for the demo so I can't comment on that, though knowing Bioware it will be just fine in the full game in a couple weeks.

I'm not sure I get the crying over the game being more "dumbed down" that a lot of people on the internet seem to be doing though. Things just move a much more brisk pace.

I played the demo as a rogue and my wife played it as a mage. We both found it quite fun! Also it was pretty great to see Kate Mulgrew reprise her role as Flemeth like 15 minutes into the game! She's amazing.

March 8th can't get here soon enough!

I was not excited about Dragon Age 2. I was angry because I would only get to play as a human, and why would I want to do that when I'm already a human and had the option of being an elf or a dwarf before? Basically, I've spent the past couple of months pouting.

I'm an idiot.

I spent a while playing the demo and squealed and whooped and got as into it as I did with the first one. As soon as my husband's done with it (he gets first dibs, and I haven't played Awakenings yet so that's my chance) I'll be playing it.

I don't understand that either because I think the combat is a vast improvement over DA:O. The combat is more action oriented, but it's not dumbed down. The powers seem to be a bit more streamlined than the original but since there were so many that I hardly used I'm not complaining too much, although I think in the long run that may be something that annoys those playing as a mage.

I was playing a rouge and man did I love seeing my character jump all over the place and actually using backstab efficiently. I think they did a better job of improving DA between the two games than they did for ME because that game was dumbed down drastically between 1 and 2 on the RPG elements, this one doesn't appear to be. I'm not complaining at all because Lady Hawke is just so frakking good looking and the combat is so fast paced I actually felt like I was making her fight instead of standing and swinging a sword around.

But you also have to remember that a lot of those fans complaining are used to the tried-and-true Bioware formula for RPG combat: click there and your character will attack until given other orders. With the exceptions of Jade Empire and Mass Effect, essentially all other Bioware games were like that. Or at least weren't as action oriented as this one is.

All it is is different though, and different does not always mean bad. I look forward to trying it out, personally. Although, my only complaint is that it leapt from like three hits to kill a Hurlock in the first game and like 20 in the demo...it makes it seem arcadey and not as realistic. (Yes, I am aware a critiqued a fantasy game on realism).

I bought and played the Stone Prisoner (Shale), Warden's Keep, and Return To Ostigar DLCs over the weekend, and the equipment from them was great. Definitely skewed the curve on equipment, even though I was late enough in my playthrough that I didn't get much chance to play around with Shale.

When I got to the Archdemon, I had Alistair wearing full Cailen, and my rogue was using Starfang and Duncan's Sword as his primary weapons. Didn't really have much effect on the rest of my main party, but that let me shift some good equipment down to the gate crew. Not that they needed it, since I just had Morrigan constantly casting Storm of the Century at the spot the Darkspawn showed up. :p

I think I was using Starfang, had Alistair in like full Grey Warden and Sten in full Mass Effect/Dragon....Slayer? Whatever armor the white with the red dragon.

Oh yeah, I had Sten in Blood Dragon too. Didn't end up using Warden Commander set at all, since my character was a rogue. Don't remember what he ended up in for armor though.

Bioware: Dragon Age 3 to be “the best from both games, Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2″
http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/08/19/bioware-dragon-age-3-to-be-the-best-from-both-games-dragon-age-origins-and-dragon-age-2/

"We caught hold of Bioware CEO Dr. Ray Muzyka on the Gamscom show floor and got a chance to ask him about the polarising effect of Dragon Age 2, and Bioware’s plans for Dragon Age 3. “The team is going to have some things that are going to surprise both sets of fans, both core fans and new fans with a marriage of the best from both games, Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2,” he says"
...
“What we need to do as developers is take that feedback from both sets of fans to heart and see about marrying that in future games in the Dragon Age franchise. I think that the team has actually got a great plan. I think the team is going to have some things that are going to surprise both sets of fans, both core fans and new fans with a marriage of these… the best from both games, Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2. And we look forward more to talking about that in the future.”
