It's not a book but the Ghosts of the Osfront series of podcasts by Dan Carlin on Hardcore History are really good

kind of the reason i want to read more about it. Hardcore history is one of my favorite podcasts. its simply superb on all levels. but i'm trying my hand at a little personal writing project and i'm going to do some research

p.s. I'm really enjoying the arc on the fall of Rome he's doing right now.
