Yikes..a seven season rewatch? Hours and hours of SMG and awesome writing ?

I'm there :D

We might have to keep it hush hush, so as not to arouse the ire of the sci fi hardliners around here !!

Has anyone been reading the Season Eight comics?

Count me in. I haven't seen seasons 1 through 4 and the first half or so of 5, but I loved the rest of it, I become a huge Buffy fan when the sixth and seventh seasons were on.

Well, actually, I don't really have the time to watch all seven seasons... studying can be a bitch... but I'll be lurking!

I'm a HUGE Buffy fan. Like I have books, all seasons, t shirts, a lunch box. In fact, I went to the Buffy Musical in Dallas & Austin. Alas, Fox has crushed the musical. Those money grubbing bastards!!

To be completely honest, I too have the Buffy lunchbox, which I use to hold my Halo action figures. And my wife got me the cardboard standup Buffy (lifesize) for my birthday a few years ago, and positioned it looking out the sliding glass door so I saw it when I got home. I got three calls from neighbors asking me if I had a new hot babysitter ! Has anyone played the XBox games, there's two for Buffy...lots of fun.

It was like the Rocky Horror Picture show... for Geeks.

There was a guy who ran out in a bunny suit for Anya's rock solo. For Tara's song, "Under Your Spell" we all used poppers for the "end". We tried to sing "Let me rest in peace" in with fake vampire teeth. We yelled at Dawn.

We left there hoarse but it was sooo much fun. One of my fave episodes.

So here's my thinking:

If one of you would be willing to take charge of the effort, I'll set up the re-watch here. We've been talking about adding a "listener re-watch" area anyway, and this would be as good a time as any. We'll probably limit it to some reasonable number so we don't flood the forum, but I'm totally up for making what you want to do possible.

Takers drop me a PM and we'll work it out.

My wife and I just started watching Buffy for the first time. We just finished season 2 and are trying to get our hands on more. I thought season 1 was pretty good, but a tad cheesy (intentionally, of course). Season 2 really seemed to pick up the continuity and plot direction. We're hooked.

Perhaps if we limited all the rewatches to say 3 but take votes on it, but you can only nominate a season at a time. So at the moment we have firefly and BSG and we decide we want to watch Buffy and those are the 3 rewatches, but at the end of season 1 of buffy we take a vote and decide that now we'd like to rewatch chuck instead of continue to season 2 with buffy.

The reason I think it needs limiting is that if every show thats worth rewatching gets rewatched we're going to need at least another 20 hours in the day. (BSG, Firefly, star trek, family guy, american dad, chuck, burn notice, peep show, cheers, frasier, mighty boosh, Desperate housewives, lost, Buffy, Grey's anatomy...)

I love the idea too, but also agree that more rewatches could become a little cumbersome. Especially with new BSG eps coming up. Which would replace the re-watch. So I'm not sure what my point is. No rush to start Buffy re-watch, but down the road or whenever, I'm definitely in.

Brittonlj, I started watching Buffy solo. And my wife was like, "What the hell are you watching?" Within a month, she was hooked. And we started watching between, I think, seasons five and six, when Fox was running two episodes a night. That was a lot of fun, the nightly two-hour Buffy date. And so great to be able to catch up on years of TV so quickly. (When i was a kid, they didn't have DVD box sets...)

Did anyone catch (the actor who plays) Spike on Torchwood?

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is a United States government (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_government) agency (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independent_Agencies_of_the_United_States_Governme nt), created, directed, and empowered by Congressional (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Congress) statute (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statute) (see 47 U.S.C. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_47_of_the_United_States_Code) § 151 (http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/47/151.html) and 47 U.S.C. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_47_of_the_United_States_Code) § 154 (http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/47/154.html)), and with the majority of its commissioners appointed by the current president.

In the actions taken against broadcasters, the FCC is frequently criticized for violating the First Amendment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Amendment) guarantee of Freedom of Speech (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_Speech), both directly by censorship and enforcement action sometimes alleged to be politically motivated, and indirectly by the general intimidation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intimidation) that FCC action allegedly creates, particularly with the U.S. Congress (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Congress) considering increasing fines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fine) exponentially (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exponent).

On the issue of broadcast indecency, the FCC has taken heat from conservatives and family-oriented groups for not sufficiently censoring and restricting sexually explicit and violent material to which the groups believe children should not be exposed

Now, I have been aware of the FCC somewhere in the back of my head, but reading this excerpts from Wikipedia sent shivers down my spine. There actually EXISTS an organization with the right to CENSOR television? How does that work, what is the justification for that and what is the public opinion on that?

I'm reminded of the Picard quote from the episode The Drumhead: "With the first link the chain is forged. The first speech censored, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably."

Plus, we're reading 1984 as the book of the month.

Anyway, to get back to Buffy, I haven't seen anyone from the Buffy cast in really big roles lately, what are they doing?
Plus, I'm gonna watch Titan A.E. real soon (Joss Whedon), thanks to Chuck for the blog post, I'm definitely gonna check that one out.

I have seen all of Buffy’s seven seasons and all of Angel, but for some reason as time went on, I liked Buffy less and less. After Graduation, it really seemed to go downhill (maybe it’s just me), but regardless, I would definitely be up for re-watching Buffy.

For a mere $100, you can own all seven seasons in one swell set. at Amazon. That's Firefly-at-Target kind of low, low prices!

If a rewatch were to start, what are everyone's ideas on it? Every single season? I recently caught one of the early Master episodes. Ooooof, not so good. I'm really not interested in rewatching those eps.

I'd vote to start at Season 3. Not that we'd be doing the re-watch specifically to convert people, but I'd say that most newcomers wouldn't make it through the first two seasons.

That is a great price! (Just texted the spouse for official purchasing-clearance)... I hadn't seen it for less than $120 ANYWHERE.

I'm a recent newcomer to Buffy and the wife and I started with borrowed copies of season 1 and 2. I liked them very much, but I know what you mean about Season 3... granted I think 3 plays off a lot of the tension and anxiety of seasons 1 and 2. Hell, even Angel's story alone would be tremendously neutered if you started at season 3. ;)

Edit: I bought the full series of Buffy and the full series of Angel for $170... Not too shabby (about $14/season). I couldn't find any further discount coupons, but they do offer free shipping and of course, tax free.

Oh, yeeeeeaaaah. Very good point. That could totally change my answer. In fact, that does change my answer.

Note from there: In an interview once, Joss Whedon said that he felt like the show was successful when a girl fan was talking about the Angel twist (spoilerific details excluded), and she said, "That exact same thing happened to me!"

I was thinking about that myself. There are so many episodes, i'm one of the Buffy faithful so i could go for every single one in order, but you make a good point. When i was introduced to Buffy; as i was watching the DVD's the first season never really hit me it took to the second season for me (I was sold at school hard).

A thought that rang through my head was maybe to start. We do a book club selection kind of thing; we all vote for our favorites from each season and rewatch them.

I could also miss the first season, but I wouldn't want to miss season 2.

Sounds like a good foundation for a plan. It's been a while since I watched season one. Maybe people who are more familiar could come up with a watch/skip list, maybe a master summary -- I'm sure Wiki has something that's easy to crib from or just link to. Does anyone have season one handy?

I'm not saying there's no way I'd watch all of season one. But a seven-season rewatch is unprecedented for GWC, and again, I'd hate to lose any converts in the early phases and deprive them of the future joys of "The Zeppo" episode.

Does anyone have any thoughts about timing, like either starting right after Firefly wraps, or maybe waiting until after BSG 4.0 wraps?

And all this talk about Babylon Five also sounds more and more intriguing.

Yeah, me too. I've decided to netflix season 7. I saw when it aired originally, I was in 13th grade and I had some friends who were into it as well and it was just so much fun, coming to school on Thursdays (Buffy was on Wednesday nights here) and talking about Buffy first thing in the morning. I miss those days.

By the way, some Commander Keen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commander_Keen)lore:

In the early 90s, there was this series of PC games called Commander Keen and I played them all, all six of them, it was one of the coolest I think you it's called "jump'n'run" games ever. And it was scifi themed! They were made by "Apogee" from Texas and yeah, I don't know, maybe it was a thing that was bigger in my part of the world, but me and my friends totally dug it. If you liked the movie (and I remember liking it a little), you're going to LOVE the series. It's light years beyond. Not quite so campy, but like Firefly, an amazing mix of drama, comedy and fantasy (as opposed to sci fi). Joss Whedon is brilliant, and once you get past some of the first season episodes, which can be a little over the top (though I liked most of them), it really becomes extraordinary.

I don't think so. I came late to the Buffy Party, and my first exposure was "Once More, With Feeling" having read all the hype. With no frame of reference, my reaction was, "meh". I suggest something like "Hush". I would say "Becoming I & II" but it would really be a shame to watch it without the series of episodes that leads up to it. How about "Surprise" & "Innocence"? Or, on the lighter side, "I Was Made to Love You"?

Doc

I'd suggest something like "Grave" or "Villians" but that might skip too much backstory.

GalaxyRanger

Grave and Villains are both episodes from the story arc at the very end of season 6, right? Great, great stuff, but I'd say it's almost impossible to understand the plot when not having seen the whole arc.

I would like to defend "One More, With Feeling," though. IMHO, it gets across the spirit of the series pretty well and can be enjoyed as a stand-alone episode or maybe as a two-parter in connection with Tabula Rasa (that was the following episode, wasn't it?)
And the hype was justified. It's a great episode and I loved almost all of the songs.

dxf
March 27th, 2008, 11:55 AM
i gotta vote against "Once More With Feeling," which is great... but unless you know what's going on, it's just a bunch of people you don't know singing about some stuff. Might as well rent Oklahoma.

I don't recall the first two seasons on an episode-by-episode basis, but maybe something from season two, right around when Spike arrives and the Master goes bye-bye? Angel is essential to understanding the series and Buffy, but the Spike episodes better reflect what the series would ultimately become.

GalaxyRanger
March 27th, 2008, 12:37 PM
Yeah, okay I'll cave. As much as I love Once More With Feeling, maybe something from one of the early seasons would be better suited for people who've never seen any Buffy episode at all.

If the goal is to pick just one episode to show someone what Buffy is about and convince them to watch more, I think Grave might just fit the bill. The end of that one exemplifies the very best of Buffy IMHO.

The only issue I could see with Hush (A Most (maybe the most) Excellent Episode!) is that due to certain, ah, story requirements, the snappy dialogue that we Buffy fans are always pointing to as awesome and a reason to watch are somewhat lacking....

Since it's been pointed out that 'Hula' on the web has S1 and 2 for free, maybe we could pick a few from there as a start..I am going to check and suggest a couple...I just hate to skip Buff's formative years, ya know?

Here's an episode guide with super-short summaries:

http://www.buffyguide.com/episodes.shtml

And I hereby nominate these eps for introductions to Buffy. They're all, if I remember right, pretty standalone-y.

From season one

"The Witch"

or

"The Pack"

From season 2, I hereby nominate

1) "Inca Mummy Girl"

2) "What's My Line" pts 1+2.

Both have little tastes of the funny, and the characters start to become more 3-D. "What's My Line" sucks you in and has an instant sequel if you're hungry for more.

And all are available free at http://www.hulu.com

"Band Candy" is one of my all-time favorites, but I don't know if it would fly as a solo episode. The humor is how out of character everyone acts... you just have to know what is "in character" first.

That being said, we are just getting into season 4 and the first few episodes are fantastic... I may have some new all time favorites soon.
