I heard this guy, Charlie Todd, on NPR tonight, talking about his street-theater group "Improv Everywhere." Here's the description:

Improv Everywhere causes scenes of chaos and joy in public places. Created in August of 2001 by Charlie Todd, Improv Everywhere has executed over 70 missions involving thousands of undercover agents. The group is based in New York City.

In the latest one, they stage an impromptu musical in a food court where people start randomly bursting into song and dance just like in the movies. The reactions of bystanders is great. Also, the video where they get 70 people to walk around a San Diego mall holding bananas to their ears, talking on them like cell phones is funny:

I think they're best known for the no-pants subway ride in New York. This year over 900 people showed up to ride the subway in undies and boxer shorts.

1,200 New Yorkers ride the subway without pants in a snow storm.

Don't we have a large number of GWCers who live in New York.

How did I not make that connection?

IE (http://improveverywhere.com/) has been doing this for a number of years now. It's an annual event.

"... if one person, just one person does it they may think he's really sick and
they won't take him. And if two people, two people do it, in harmony,
they may think they're both faggots and they won't take either of them.
And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in
singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and walking out. They may think it's an
organization. And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day,I said
fifty people a day walking in singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and
walking out. And friends they may thinks it's a movement."
