View Full Version : General Banter Thread Mark-IV

So, I thought to myself, "Self...perhaps we need here in GWC forums is a thread to simply chat with one another, drop by and say hi even when you are passing through...a place where on topic doesn't exist, a community center smack dab in the middle of the forum."

So, being the clever man I am I decided to start a new thread and see what happens.

So, have you ever noticed how IQs severely drop when it rains? Seriously. In New York City chaos ensues everytime. People stop moving and stare at the sky as if to say, "Water? Falling from the sky? How can that be!?!?" People either start moving at a crawl getting in the way of everyone else or they take off and sprint which makes so much sense now that the ground has become slippery. Slow down their genius...you may slide into traffic.

I am a believer in giant umbrellas. Small umbrellas don't make any sense to me...they are like a practical joke. You open them up during a rain storm and maybe you will keep your head dry as the rest of you gets totally wet. I like my umbrella to be like a circus tent. I want to shield my entire body and those around me from rain. Of course, you have to be courteous...nothing says jackass quicker than a person with a giant umbrella who seems unaware he is bumping into every person around him.

Anyway, that is what was on my mind and I wanted to share. Post away! Quick thoughts, long thoughts, reactions to other people's thoughts...a sonnet, whatever.

Come on in and play, the water is perfect.

I would say that only people over 6 feet tall should use giant umbrellas, because they can have them go over the shorter people with smaller umbrellas without causing too many bumping problems.

I hate it when I need to get up for a minute from a table where I'm working with my laptop, and I ask the person next to me to keep an eye on it, they say sure, and when I come back, they are gone. If you were going to leave, why didn't you say so when I asked? Nobody touched my laptop during that time, but come on.

I would like to petition to rename this thread the "Official Galactica Watercooler Jibba Jabba thread"

On the subject of Umbrellas I hate that my mother raised me right, If im bypassing someone Ill tilt my umbrella to the right to ensure it doesnt jab them, making me wet, if they have an umbrella Ill lift mine up high, making me wet, and if theres many people Ill close my umbrella, making me wet.

I don't know why I have an umbrella really.

If I can talk about anything, I'd like to whine a bit.

I'm really tired today...

I did a five minute standup set at local open mic last night, which means I stayed out until almost midnight on a work night. Today I'm suffering for it. Fun though.

I was at a concert in a tiny venue last week and the lady on the step next to me asked if I could save her spot while she got a drink. I said sure and stood there on her step until the band came back on stage. I couldn't see from the lower step though and went back to my spot but tried to "stand big" and take up half of her spot too. I kept looking for her while trying to enjoy the show. then other folks came over to "her" spot to take photos so I moved back to my spot. she never did come back. maybe she saw that others had taken her spot and she was annoyed at me. oh well. I got annoyed too.

Solai

'Saving the spot' or 'Watch this' has always been a hard one for me. To be suddenly indebted to a stranger is just strange on many levels. Yet I have had to do this on numerous occasions...usually when on a train and I absolutely have to go to the bathroom.

Have you ever actually heard someone say, "No" as a response to, "Can you watch this/save my spot?" I think that would be hysterical. Maybe something slightly sarcasticly clever like, "I don't know if I can shoulder that awesome responsibililty" or "Let me get back to you on that."

I'd like to take a moment and thank my six yr-old for allowing me to use the laptop for a moment and take a moment to say, Hello All. What is it with kids these days ?? I stare glassy-eyed and clueless at the NickJr. website as the little jr Alpaca navigates it like a software engineer. Now he's got his own stuffed animal that also has it's own website, where he and all the other stuffed animals can get together and talk about stitching, pile depth, whatever....I still remember my first VCR...I was twenty yrs old, and it was the size of a suitcase. Big dumb buttons.. Stereo playback ?? Ha ha..That was several yrs later. Now my kids have more computing power in their Leapsters (small portable vid game) than the Apollo astronauts had on their onboard computer !!
I'm glad for all this stuff, I just think it's funny.

Funny you should mention that, but I've been dealing with writers' block for a couple of months now, although it started out as a purposeful attempt to take a break after finishing a massively large piece in August. Now, I simply don't know where to go next. I'm hoping a new project will present itself soon (I just made a pitch to a producer in New York for a possible chamber opera, though I'm not sure whether or not she'll bite or when I will know) and snap me out of it.

For some reason this just reminds me of stories Dweezil Zappa tells of growing up with Frank as a father. Apparently he and her mother wanted her to be so independent that she was left no rebellion options other than to be ultra conservative, at least socially (I don't think the Zappa's have a politically conservative bone in their bodies).

Injured my ankle playing beach volleyball on Monday night. It ain't getting better. Can't take any time off work because my only staff member is off playing hockey at the Aussie Masters Games this week so I'm all alone in my office, which, of course is up a couple of flights of stairs. Sigh...
To top it off I gotta go to my partner's work function tonight and make smiley-face-nice-talk with a bunch of bank managers who, when they are not at work....talk about work. Yawn.

It's a bit of hit & giggle really, a local comp and I am in one of the 4 teams our gym has in place. We don't take it too seriously and it's more of a social game than anything else. I played the same comp for a while last year, then switched to mixed netball and promptly stopped when my knees said "ENOUGH!". Beach volleyball is much lower impact on joints, I find.
Gotta say it's getting harder to keep up with 20yr olds bouncing around the court as competition!

Well, other than the wife and I being exhausted from all of the driving and anxiety of feeling powerless, everything's great. The baby gained 30 grams overnight, on top of the 45 she gained the previous day. So she's now much bigger than she was at the start of the week. If she keeps this up, she'll be back up to her birthweight by this time next week...which would totally rock!

Yup... That's what it's like to live in LA... I'm getting paid to work out, I've played poker with Romo Lampkin, and I do standup comedy when the wife gives me a boy's-night-out... Hah -- dismal I feel sorry for you, and at the same time I feel your pain. I've been on a shoot before where I had to be in a bathing suit for two scenes fairly large scenes, a fairly uncomfortable one at that, for 4 days. Worse, we were filming out of season for the "summer" beachy scene so it was like god... 45 degrees which isn't that bad for a while but for about 12-14 hours a day for 4 days it sucks... big time.

Speaking of which my banter is that I just got back from a 56 hour movie (on location) shoot. Now I had a 6 hour sleep break in there (in which I slept on a couch that was just around). We were shooting at a location where we had a time frame and we had to get all the scenes in. So of course nothing went off as planned, all the little stuff is what held us up. We didn't have a prop we thought we had... the batteries for the flashlights for the main character didn't work, we had no extras, so we had to go get some which of course the closest place to get any was like an hour a way. Ahhh... thats what working on super indie films is like...

Thank you notes do suck. I prefer a phone call or something more personal. That way people KNOW how grateful I am, you know?

Me, I have no complaints. No randomness. I'm enjoying my last week before going back to work by procrastinating like mad. My wife had some interviews today (fingers crossed) and I'm a step closer to securing at least one pretty significant commission which will pay handsomely if it comes to full fruition. Life feels pretty good right now, even if still precarious (hey, we should be grateful for what we have, you know?).

Today was Three Kings Day for people from hispanic/Latin American cultures. We haven't been too consistent about observing it, but I was feeling homesick and patriotic, so my six year old and I picked some grass for the camels to eat last night and put that in a shoebox along with a bowl of water under the Christmas tree. The kids got a little loot (not much. These magi are poor--Santa has the big bucks and ate the presents budget): the oldest got four Junie B. Jones books which she'd hoped she'd get for Christmas and Elena got her first baby doll and a bilingual book.

And the January 16th DC frak party/meet up is on!

It was a good day.

Skinny-dipping should be conducted after hours when all the children have gone to bed and security is looking the other way.

Well I still am, but it's all hockey games of late....Sat morning, Sunday afternoon, Monday Night on ice, then Tuesday evenings....doesn't give much to write home about (well aside from bragging of the scores and my unhealthy assists to games played ratio in goal on Sat mornings...).....I'm at that classic "losing size but staying the same weight" point....frustrating but now I can actually play full games of floor hockey running around playing defense, that would be unheard of even three years ago!

has everyone stopped getting fit? nobody seems to be posting in the fitness thread any more, feels like I'm working out alone....

Fitness has been so depressing for me lately. Medical issues have imposed lengthy, multiple gym blackouts. Even besides that, I'm really swimming uphill against exhaustion. I could probably start running again now if I were very careful and cleared it with my doctors but I'm about to face another workout ban of about 10 days. I'd prefer to wait until I can really dedicate myself to retraining, which will be around August, I think. I have lost significant leg and back strength and my lungs have slightly less capacity. My heartbeat reaches its 80% exertion point about 10 minutes sooner into a high-intensity, no-impact cardio workout (usually the Arc Trainer). Like I said, depressing. So I haven't been checking the FitSmart forum. Still listening to the casts, though. It usually makes me feel better when I do.

And, it's not all bad. I have pretty nice arms from forearm to shoulder. Someday soon I'll be able to really work on the shoulders and back again. Today I had physical therapy at 6 and knew I wouldn't get to the gym after because I needed to stop at the pharmacy before closing. So I just walked out of the office at 4:30 and went to the gym. 40 minutes of Arc Trainer, interval training between 40 and 60 pounds of resistance. That's about my max right now.

I can't reach the magic space where my body is running just under the red line and I feel like I'm absolutely frakking infinite. But I can get some endorphins out of it. And the more I do this, the closer I'll be to regaining my form. So I tell myself and I hope I keep listening.

has everyone stopped getting fit? nobody seems to be posting in the fitness thread any more, feels like I'm working out alone....

Just wanted to add my 2 cents. I am still working out with my trainer for about a year now. The other thing I have been trying to do is walk every day that I don't go to the gym. I didn't realize how little activity I was doing on the days I wasn't at the gym. The Nike Fuel Band I bought has been a good reminder to do this as I don't like only having red lights. Not sure how much changes to my overall shape, but I do feel stronger and have better aerobic activity. I try view the gym and walking as life time changes, so even if my physique stays the same I just need to keep going.

Star Buccaneer, sounds like medical issues are really over-riding fitness goals right now. It seems like you are still motivated though, which is the key thing. Good luck!

you know it's fairly amazing, even as recently asa year ago if someone had told that not only would I be going to the gym 5 days a week, but that I'd *Want* to go there that often and would get actively twitchy if I didn't go for more than two days...
It's a lot to do with sobriety with me I think, coming up on 11 months now and I've gone from not thinking I could have a life without alcohol, to wondering if I could manage a day, to a week, a month, to the point now that I don't WANT to be anything other than clear headed, for today at least.

Day 3 at camp and we're currently under "Thorguard" because of a thunderstorm rolling through.

Hunger Games?

If it is herding 11 year boys, yes, definitely Hunger Games meets Lord of the Flies. Now I'm hungry for ham. NOT BECAUSE OF 11 YEAR OLD BOYS YOU PERV! I am making an in joke about Lord of the Flies. Because I've opened a book. Look into it. Why am I arguing with you? You are innocent. You haven't even responded yet. I am proactively responding to you. Smartass. Yeah. I know what you are thinking. Even before you think it. That shirt looks great on you by the way, have you lost weight?
